The annular blowout preventer is a special mechanical device used to seal, control and monitor oil and gas wells. It surrounds the top of the wellbore in the form of a ring or collar. When the well is kicked out and the blowout preventer opens, the fluid in the well forces the mud upward along the wellbore. The blowout preventer shuts off drill pipe, drill collars, and any shape of tubing in the drilling well.

In addition, annular blowout preventers can also close bare boreholes, i.e., boreholes that do not require any fittings at all. When the blowout preventer is closed, the water flow stops and flows to the flow stopper. It is usually placed on top of the gate blowout preventer. The blowout preventer consists of a body, packing element, flexible annulus, metal insert, packing unit hole, piston chamber, port, piston, removable head and blowout preventer hole.

The annular hollow blowout preventer uses hydraulic pressure (hydraulic oil) to open and close. A telescoping port on the blowout preventer housing provides the means to connect the hydraulic line. The line consists of a hammerhead fitting, a high-pressure hose, a high-pressure valve, and a blowout preventer hydraulic hose.
